Canadian Innovation: MARSH PEGS!

Kimberly M. Winter, Kitimat, BC & Edmonton, AB

What keeps hockey nets from sliding around on the ice? Marsh Pegs, of course! Marsh Pegs are a flexible hockey net anchoring system invented in 1984, in Kitimat, BC, by my friend Dana’s paternal grandfather, Fred Marsh. Marsh Pegs are now the industry standard for hockey nets across the NHL (since 1991), for most professional hockey leagues in North America and Europe, the World Cup Games and the Winter Olympics (since 1998), and are recommended for use by the International Ice Hockey Federation. This is a story of a Zamboni driver whose passion forever changed the sport he loved.

Kim Winter is a proud born & bred Edmontonian, and a graduate of the University of Alberta. Kim is a lifelong performer who never misses an opportunity to vie for the microphone. She has funnelled her enthusiasm for an audience into a successful career in tech sales by day, and more recently, as a hobbyist event emcee by night. Kim loves sharing a good story, and she took First Place at the Edmonton Story Slam in June 2023. This is Kim’s very first attempt at an audio-recorded story. Kim lives in Edmonton with her French Bulldog, Poppy.
